How do we spread the love? 10% of the net profit from our digital book sales, and 1% of sales from all other products, are donated to 350.org, a nonprofit building a grassroots climate movement in over a hundred countries.
Why are we doing this?
Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, yet so few of us are talking about it – to our friends, family and co-workers. Research by Yale University found that only 1 in 25 Americans hear people they know talk about climate change once a week. 16% hear people they know talk about once a month, and a full quarter of Americans never hear people they know talk about it at all!
Why aren’t we talking more?
There are many reasons, but it probably doesn’t help that Einstein’s papers are judged more readable than the most recognized climate change reports from the United Nations! Research shows that while newspaper coverage of these reports help make them more readable, they also make them more pessimistic.
If we think it’s all too awful to even talk about, how can we start reclaiming the power we have to solve it?
Behavioral change, tough though it may be, is one of the biggest hammers in our toolbox against climate change! How? Everything from moderating how much beef and mutton we eat, adjusting our thermostat by two degrees, washing our laundry on a cold cycle, choosing an electric car, to voting for a government that acts on climate and helping to raise awareness!
Did you know, research by the European Commission found that realistic behavioral change could shave off around 600 million tons of carbon dioxide just within Europe in 2020? Research by the Netherlands found that if we all chose a healthy diet, we could bring down the cost of limiting warming to 2 degrees Celsius by half. That’s a whopping 50 percent discount from following a healthy diet, as recommended by the Harvard Medical School for Public Health, of around 90 grams of meat and eggs a day.
Just how much faster could all our everyday actions take us?
Enabling people to start talking about climate change in a fun and creative way, and empowering them to #ActOnClimate, is why we do what we do!
Who are we?
Hey there! I’m Suzanne, welcome to Little Climate!
I set this up with the aim of enabling the everyday citizen to understand just how scarily fast climate change is happening, and to empower them to take back control and choose to #ActOnClimate.
I’ve worked in the climate change field since 2007, and started in the emissions markets in London working with large energy firms, before moving onto scaling up low-carbon projects in poor communities here in Asia. This experience and my own scientific background in Physics and Environmental Technology mean that even though it’s easy for me to understand the science and the solutions out there, it used to be hard for me to explain it to friends and family.
This disconnect – knowing how much of a challenge climate change is rapidly becoming, yet seeing how detached everyday citizens are (even those with much to lose like us here on a small island) – drove me to explore new, (hopefully) effective ways of reaching out.
I’ve always been a believer of useful enterprise, much more so since working with social entrepreneurs bringing clean cookstoves, household water filters and other low-carbon innovations to the people at the base of the pyramid who most need it, and who at the same time are doing more to prevent climate change than many others with so much more. Little Climate is a social enterprise focused on bringing home the climate message to the masses, in fun, unconventional and at times downright silly ways to get people excited about the potential for change!
Do you feel the same weltschmerz?
Comes from the German words “welt” (world) and “schmerz” (pain)
Meaning pain at the actual state of the world compared to how it should be.
Do something about it, make your voice heard! Get active on our online communities to share your ideas for change, support the work we’re doing by sharing it with your friends, or drop us a message if you’re keen to volunteer!
